This is it! The first post of the DanceSF New Year. Congratulations - you made it this far, and are actually reading a salsa related blog. So, what next?

Can anything you do guarantee happiness? Your job can guarantee money. Your significant other can guarantee companionship. Dance . . . well, it's the closest thing you'll find to a cure for the "blues". Once you learn - there's simply no going back, and the hardest step you'll take is the first (by far).

I hope you'll join us for classes, at DanceSF, or at the very least, become inspired to start some type of dancing. Remember, you don't need a partner, and you don't need any experience to take our classes.

Also, don't forget, we just came out with the DanceSF Salsa Dance Guide, which will probably answer a lot of your questions, and help you get started!

It's not easy - but our classes are hugely fun, very supportive, and really social. When you throw that in with amazingly solid teaching skills, and proven methods, you've got a surefire recipe for success. Actions, Reactions and Holiday Spirit

Today, I feel Horrible! Last night I had just taught an incredibly great, totally packed, and very fun workshop, but in the end, still felt bad, and it's such a life lesson, I wanted to share it with everyone, especially for the holidays!

What it boils down to is - at the end of the workshop, someone asked me for a favor. At the time, I was hopped up on coffee, my mind was racing a million times a minute, and my thoughts were somewhere else, and I didn't really recognize what was being asked of me. In short, I blew it off (his words). In hindsight, it doesn't seem that difficult to understand what the favor was, nor does it seem that difficult to grant it, but at the time, my mind was simply somewhere else - I was not "in the moment", and I simply didn't concentrate on what was being said.

Long and short of it - he took offense (rightfully perhaps), and I probably lost a friend (at best), and a student (at worst). Regardless, it would have been easy for me to do the right thing, and in my nature to do so, but in this case, I just spaced it. This kind of stuff happens, and when it does, I tend to beat myself up about it. Luckily he brought it to my attention (otherwise I literally would never have even known), but left before I could "make it right". So, as a way of cathartic writing, since most probably he'll never see this, here's my two cents - so that everyone out there can "make it right".

In the midst of the Holidays, it's even more important to listen to what people are telling you, and try to make a positive difference in people's lives. I mean, really. Especially as dancers! We have the ability to make a lot of people very happy, relatively easily.

Understand that everyone has a full life, and there are doubtless countless things you can't be aware of in every person's life you meet. Always give the benefit of the doubt when possible, even when you've become cynical over time. As crazy, hectic, and outlandish your life is right now, chances are the person next to you has stories just as real or poigant. Every, Single person. Most of all - make a positive difference for someone else, even if it means something out of the ordinary for you. It's going to be different for everyone - perhaps help a lady at the supermarket with her groceries, or buy the guy/gal behind you a cup of coffee in line. It doesn't matter. The favorite one is the to pay the toll for the next 5 cars behind you (that even got done for me once - and it made me smile).

So, here's the challenge! Next time you're on the dance floor, grab that newbie - take the woman tapping her foot on the sidelines and not being asked to dance, and show them a GREAT time. Oh, and ladies, this goes for you too. Understand what a difference a single dance can make, and give freely this holidays.

Sorry for the rant - not sure it even makes sense! However, it sure was cathartic to write it, and if it makes a difference to one person - I suppose it's been worth it.

It might not make you feel good, it might be difficult, it might not be reciprocated, . . . but before you know it, one day (if you're very lucky), you wake up, and you've made a difference.

Salsa Dance with DanceSF November and December!

In November, that's our last full month of 4 week progressive classes until January, but don't fret! You can still join us in Decmeber for some very cool workshops, including a Beginning Workshop on Dec. 5th (right after the Canvas Party - which you all should go to). This is great for Beginners - people who have never danced, or those who have completed 1-2 beginner sessions, because it's a workshop that drills all the fundamentals of the dance - no partner or experience is requried, and you can sign up NOW!

Also, on Dec. 10th, we have an intermediate workshop, covering some more intermediate style stuff, but you've gotta have your basics down (basic, side, left/right turn, cross body). Join us for these stellar workshops!

Salsa in New York City - A Travelogue!

Part 1:

New York, New York, what a wonderful town! 25 dancers from the SF Bay Area all descended upon an unsuspecting New York this week, and caused an unbelievable amount of trouble for seven days of workshops and dancing. It's Sunday morning - the day after the Copacabana (fantastic band - Conjunto Classico), and about six too many tequila shots. Alex (our New York co-ordinator for the trip) just called - I'm late for our Descarga Latina (Nelson Flores) workshop. After the last few days of Delille Thomas, and yesterday's Santo Rico (Thomas), I'm completely worked. I must admit - the life and vitality of New York (let's not even talk about the dancing), is really amazingly fun. There's just no where else like it. And yes - my intentions were to run out the door to the Bronx and catch the workshop, but alas, I'm opting for a good breakfast, and to write a blog entry instead (lazy, lazy . . ). I need a little break time!

Returning to New York is all about learning. From the dancer's you dance with, to the teachers whom are giving us workshops, it's always been super invigorating for me, and always totally humbling. Dancing is a never-ending progression - and there's always more to learn. I really enjoyed this chance to take classes, and learn some real On2 style New York flavor. It's my plan to try and make it at least once a year! Our group is a mix of levels, but overall a lot of fun people. I can't believe today is our last workshop. This trip is zooming by . . .

It's funny, in every workshop, we learn at least some contradictory information, each teacher completely committed to their style, and their teaching, as the "right" way to dance! Amaryllis - shoulders go back and flow while you dance. Thomas, roll the shoulder's forward into your steps. Delille, never mix chacha and mambo comment, versus Santo Rico's chacha shine footwork (danced to an incredibly fast mambo I might add). It's fun and enlightening to see all the different styles of dance here, all within the relatively small "On2" community. Apart from Eddie Torres - I'm not sure anyone focuses on bringing new people into the scene, which might explain why at a population over 10x San Francisco, the dance/club scene has relatively few dancers (the largest New York social, still smaller than Allegro Ballroom). The music however . . . is just simply phenomenal. And the band, which recently have found far fewer places to play, are really the finest musicians you'll find almost anywhere.

A "coup" at the Copa: We waited in line after dancing at the Pier to get into the Copa, where we were one of the first people inside this monstrous club. All the tables were reserved ahead of time, but, amazingly enough, some creative thinking, a little pleading, and a connection with the hostess (along with all our available cash - thanks to Dakin), got us the ONLY table left in the entire place. A table at the Copa - not that easy to get (woohoo). Huge floor - which we had to ourselves for the first hour, before it became incredibly (and I do mean incredibly) crowded. First class band, and a fun dance crowd, made this a night to remember. Perhaps I'll return here on Tuesday! This was the only club where the air conditioning was adequate. Even with one thousand people.

This is my 1st quick update from the streets of New York!

Part 2: New York, New York, what a Wonderful Town!

Ok, so I've gone a little New York crazy. The weather has really been great this past week, with cool breezes, fair days, and temperate nights. Great to wander around the active streets, sipping iced coffee. J I did my usual routine, but on Sunday night – got treated to the most awesome of “socials”, Jimmy Antons.

Jimmy Anton throws what is, inarguably, the best “social” salsa dance in NY. There were hundreds of people there, a live band, and endless dancing. I recognized many people from San Francisco, some past students even. The amazing Cobo brothers were in attendance (I really like the smoothness of the way these guys dance), and women outnumbered men by a small margin (never a bad thing). I had a great time dancing the night away, and getting a bite to eat afterwards – at a great thai restaurant, right off University and 13th (highly recommended for a light curry). This night alone would have been enough of a reason to come back to New York. The whole night was just that fun! There were even a few beginner’s on the floor there, which is a rarity in New York (where are all the beginner dancers?). It’s been hypothesized that since the dance level is high in New York, beginners don’t dare venture out until after a year or more of classes – but that can’t be it.

I wanted to take a class with Jimmy Anton, as I’ve heard many good things, but caught a little cold, and my desire to dance and learn has been waning a little as the trip gets longer. Now that it’s coming to an end, perhaps I’ll take a private lesson with someone (and perhaps I'll just sit around in the park, soaking up the sun).

I continued my stay at the Super8, but found an even better hotel, the La Quinta, which is even less expensive, while offering free breakfasts and wireless access. I’m becoming quite adept at saving money so I can squeeze every last day out of this adventure.

Now, even though I spoke of this earlier, I have to come back and talk about Bryant Park. This park, on 41st and 6th, is really great. It’s got all sorts of food and drink (and I’ve become addicted to the fantastic Root Beer floats they have - one a day), plus wireless access, plenty of seating, and endless people watching possibilities. The parks, scattered throughout New York, are really awesome. Union Square and NYU’s Washington Park, are also beautiful places to relax and soak in some afternoon sun (and they’re great places to write long, in-depth travel diaries). ;) It’s just a great time of year to be here.

August, Free Salsa Nights, and New Classes!

First off - Yes, there's a free salsa nigth coming, THIS Saturday, to Monte Cristo. There's a lesson at 9pm, and there's dancing all night afterwards, at this beautiful, upscale location in the San Francisco Embarcadero Center (overlooking the Ferry Building). Very cool place - http://www.salsasaturday.com!

What else? July classes are huge - and people are having a great time. Highly recommended to sign up for August classes right away! Monday classes start on August 1st. Learn to Salsa Dance, and join in to an amazingly fun, social class, which will increase your nightlife possibilities a hundred fold.

I just saw "So you think you can Dance" on Fox last night, and was kinda let down. Even though my teacher, Alex da Silva, will be in later episodes, I found the overall show to be poorly produced, and not much actual dance to be seen. It was, like all shows of this ilk, about embarassing people on television - and making or breaking their dreams. I was totally bored! Anyway, later episodes MAY be better - we can hope.

I'll see everyone at Monte Cristo this Saturday, and if you haven't signed up for our LARGE number of classes in August, now is the time! In addition, we're starting a beginning and intermediate CHA-CHA class - for the first time ever. Details available soon. First, new salsa dance classes are starting this Saturday, June 4th. New salsa dance classes on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - in San Francisco and the East Bay! These are complete new sessions - and all the info is online, at http://www.DanceSF.com

June is going to be a great month! We'll be opening a chic new salsa club for everyone, in the Embarcadero #4 (overlooking the Ferry bldg), and we'll be having classes on more nights of the week than ever before - so now's the time to learn how to salsa dance! Weekend Salsa Dance Classes

They're here! Weekend Salsa Dance Classes, at THREE locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We have a Saturday and Sunday afternoon class available in San Francisco (Saturday taught by Alison, Sunday taught by Tianne), and another Saturday class in the East Bay (taught by Tomaj).

We have so many requests for classes on the Weekends, so next Month, in June, we've decided to give you a lot of options! Join us for classes throughout the week (and now weekend too).

Hello Everybody -

May classes have started, and they're in full swing! Feel freet drop in to any of our ongoing classes. In addition, we've posted our June and July classes, and you can register for them online!

All June classes are regular 4 week series. In July, the Monday night series is only 3 weeks long (due to the 4th of July), and is availble for a special price (all other July series are normal).

Have you been to Top of the Mark Hopkins yet? It's a great class, and a live band afterwards, and won't last forever - so take advantage of it. It's every Wednesday at the Top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel, top of Nob Hill! You can't beat that.

People often ask, what's the difference between a club class, and our series classes, and the answer is: quite a bit! Club style classes are more geared towards learning some quick basics, so you can dance and have a great time. They're more free-flowing (less structured), and since they're in a club, there's more drikning, and no mirrors. You can get a lot out of them, but if you're really interested in learning how to dance - there's nothing better than a 4 week progressive series! It's by far, the best way to learn how to dance. All our classes are fun and social though - and there's never any partner or experience necessary.

Our new 4 Week Progressive Series for May is about to start, with classes on four nights of the week. It's not too late, you can sign up for any of our classes, up to and including the night the class begins! We hope to see you in classes, and it all starts this week.
